Fashionable People, Questionable Things. | I’m starting a petition to get an H&M in Halifax (Edit: Clearly my petition worked! Apparently there IS an H&M coming to Halifax! I rock!) | Fashionable People, Questionable Things.

ALLYG: Are we getting an H&M in Halifax? I thought I heard rumours…can someone help? H&M is my favorite store. I fell in love last time I was in Toronto where I purchased the most beautiful purple sweater. It was heaven. I will never forget the day I got an email from my husband while I was at an event. He wrote, “You know that purple sweater you love? It would now fit a baby. P.S. I did laundry!”. I was devastated. There were tears. I still struggle to sausage my way into it from time to time.

To the matter at hand: Matthew Williamson’s new line at H&M. I was reading my new Vogue today (the one with the COMEBACK OF THE MODELS!) and saw an incredible ad for a leather jacket Williamson designed for H&M (I am wondering if I write H&M enough if they will send me free stuff….H&M H&M H&M). LOOK AT THIS!

First off, incredible photography. I’m not really up on my photographers, so I’ll just say it’s very “Nigel Barkerish” cause I adore him.

I also love this dress. Incidentally, I’ve been chatting with my friend “G” about Spring dresses. Girl’s got gams for days, therefore, she must order this dress. Must.

See, G? Quarter length sleeves like you love!

L-A? ( I like to say “L-A?” like Randy Jackson always says, “Cowell?”, after he is done giving his summary of the American Idols performances. Although I am not saying that L-A is Simon Cowell. I would say she is Randy cause he is my favorite. On an aside, I am finding Simon a little attractive these days. Blame the hormones. GARBS OUT).

L-A: I am with you on the love for H&M. I remember when I was in Ghana in 2002 & friends were comparing their favourite H&M finds from their days of living in Europe and I was all, “What is this H&M and where can I find it?”  I think H&M was one of my first stops when I spent a couple of days in the London area on my way home from Ghana.  Finding it in Toronto made me insanely happy.  I prefered the Eaton Centre location and found pieces that quickly became wardrobe staples. Sadly, some of those staples are looking a little worn (but my devine mod-esque trench is holding up well).  Sadder still is that I can’t replace them without a trip to Southern Ontario.

But here’s my point on H&M: affordable staples AND affordable trendy pieces in a wide range of styles. You don’t walk into a store that says, “everyone in khakis” or “this season is all about the 80s aerobics instructor.”  It’s a store that lets you do both! You can do fun, like those Matthew Williamson pieces, or you can get something to wear to work. Micro minis for the younger ladies and something more age appropriate for myself.

Playing around on the site (sadly, a limited version of what other countries have access to), I pulled together this outfit for summertime:

f5df399a97d147dea14675be96dbd819

$120.

Truthfully, I probably wouldn’t wear those particular shoes or bangles. But you get the idea. A fun summer dress, fun summer shoes and accessories that you can wear to the beach or for drinks on a patio. And if you hate them next summer, you’re not out big money. Because I’m all about affordable trendy pieces and quality investment staples.

I also recommend H&M for all the young dudes. Globe and Mail columnist Russell Smith once suggested that it is the place to pick up a “trendy” suit for a reasonable price. Smith knows what he’s talking about. We picked up a bitchin’ cream linen suit for Le Husband for $200. With some minor tailoring, a bright shirt, and a pocket square,  it is a suit that has gotten him no shortage of compliments and made him a very stylish summer wedding guest. (Which makes it even more sad that we weren’t able to make it to your nuptuals Garbs, because then you would have seen him rocking the linen suit).

Alas, I fear that rumours of H&M coming to our city by the sea will amount to little more than the new version of the IKEA rumour.  I hope this is not the case, but I’m  a pessimist.  If I am wrong and it is coming, a tip to whoever is responsible for bringing the store here: can it go downtown instead of some far off, impossible to get to without a car business park?  Thanks. [Edit: I’m told we can expect one in Aug/Sept of this year @ MicMacMall.  Not downtown, but better than a business park. Note to selves: more research needed before blogging. Also need to start H&M shopping fund so I can drop cash the minute it opens].

But guys, don’t you find H&M in Canada is like a pale shadow of H&M in Europe? I was seriously disappointed in both Toronto stores. Though the clearance racks are pretty great.

  2. allygarbs says:

Sadly, I have yet to go to a european H&M so I have nothing to compare my love for Canadian H&M. Maybe I need to fly to Toronto to go to H&M with you. Our shopping experience can only be strengthened together!

I love that you know the dets, Jolemore! Why am I not suprised? : )

  5. L-A says:

I’ve heard that they are less awesome than the European versions, but I’ll take what I can get. (looks like I need to go to the mall more to stay on top of these things).

Ahhh L-A…I remember our H&M shopping spree well. If I remember correctly, that’s when I bought my first pink T n’est pas? I *have* been disappointed in Toronto H&M, but only mildly so, and only b/c I compared it to London H&M, which really, isn’t fair. If compared to say Gap or other non-entities, H&M Canada is still the best. My hubby is soon to be enroute bringing me H&M patterned tights — yeees!
