L-A: Last week, style icon Chloe Sevigny was spotted at the Coachella Music Festival wearing socks and sandals. Together.

This has set off various fashion bloggers to discuss whether or not this look should be encouraged.

But here’s the thing: why are we even talking about it? Seriously:

I don’t care what Teen Vogue, it’s llama or Burberry Prorsum think. Nor do I care if Rumi Neely of Fashion Toast approves of the look. I firmly believe the answer is always this:

Please say you agree with me, Ally!

AllyG: I’m conflicted. While I do not like socks with sandals per se, I do like the socks with Mary Janes look (Ok, seriously? My backspace button is broken. Aw! Maybe my computer thinks I’m perfect! You’re perfect too Delly!). I’m not going to lie, I do dig this look:

Remember in the 90’s when Mary Janes with thigh high hose was popular? A la Clueless with Alicia Silverstone (spl? even if it’s wrong I can’t backspace)? Well, Gossip Girls is making it popular again! And I ADORE (although I am 30 so I am not allowed to rock this when I am out shopping for fiber and wrinkle cream):

And look at Blair’s coloured tights! Am I going off track from the whole point of the post? I am aren’t I. So…to summarize, I do hate THIS:

I love, love, love THIS (which was my favorite look in the entire SATC movie. Also note that SJP is OVER THIRTY):

Do you still love me?

L-A: Of course I still love you! I can get behind the socks in cute shoes. I loved the mid-90s Clueless look and totally approve of Blake Lively/Serena’s sock/shoe combo. It’s just the sandals that get me. (although I cannot love SJP’s outfit. She kind of looks like a crazy homeless lady, one who has a good hairdresser).  Sandals and socks, no matter how hard you try to make them stylish, they will always lead to the following:

this is not okay, so let’s not encourage it. Here’s a good rule of thumb: If you need socks, then you need shoes. If you’re wearing sandals, leave the socks at home.

And a P.S. to Ms. Sevigny: You are treading dangerously into old man footwear territory. I know you tried that look on at least two days of Coachella and it is not okay. Also: Coachella is in the desert and the temperatures are usually hitting around 30+ degrees (celsius; that’s about 86 farenheit) around this time of year, so why? why wear the socks? It’s not like your feet were cold!

  1. Uh, I’m more concerned with why Chloe Sevigny is dressed like an extra from Singles:

  2. allygarbs says:

    That is indeed concerning.

  3. L-A says:

It’s true. Although dressing like she just stepped off the set of Singles is possibly the least of Chloe Sevigny’s fashion sins. I think an entire blog could be devoted to “what the hell is Sevigny wearing now?”

  4. […] It’s been awhile since we last talked socks and sandals and it’s high time we revisit the subject. To help us do just that, guest blogger Jacklyn […]
