L-A: As I woke up later than planned this morning (way to go, cute alarm clock. You failed me yet again), I rolled over and looked at what was one of my best ideas ever: storing my shoes in their shoe boxes on a book shelf in my bedroom. But a sad, sad realization dawned on me as I looked at those boxes: they were all empty. Maybe two are not. Actually, I’m pretty sure three have shoes in them. But considering there are more than three boxes there, the cold light of day shed these truths:

- this is not actually my best idea.

- I’m a few boxes away from being an episode of hoarders.

- my pretty, pretty shoes are suffering a horrible fate: the pile that is my hall closet.

I’d share a photo with you, but I can’t because I’m embarrassed by what I’ve done to my collection. And now I need to take a minute, recycle the boxes and rethink how we’re going to do this.

Because let’s face it, this is never going to happen.

Fuck you, Carrie Bradshaw and the closet you rode in on.

And honsetly, I’m never going to be as with it as Joan Crawford when it comes to my closet solutions.

She’d die if she saw my plastic hangers and my pile of shoes.

So tell me, what’s a girl on a budget to do? Any suggestions?

  1. If you have room, I kind of like the idea of getting a cheapie bookcase, spray painting it a fun colour (maybe the backs of the shelves a different colour? Or paint it white and use patterned paper on the backs of the shelves?) and putting shoes in that. Pinterest has all kinds of ideas for shoe storage but a lot of them are pricey, impractical or straight up fug.

I have one of those closet door hanger thingies, so when I open my coat closet, I can see all of my in-season shoes at once.

I have several shoe storage methods. We have a two-level shoe rack in the hall closet where I put my most frequently used boots and shoes. Then I have a similar racket in my personal closet that has the nicer shoes I wear frequently for work. Then I have one of those hanging things on the back of my closet door for flats. Out of season shoes go in shoe boxes on the top shelves of closets. And finally, fancy shoes that I don’t wear that often go in a large, low plastic bin under my bed, and I pull it out when I am dressing up.

There are also those closet bar hanging shoe rack things. I have 3 of those in my closet, an over the door hanging shoe rack in my closet and one on the back of my bedroom door..
